Julie Grivel

Julie graduated with distinction from the University of Alberta’s Faculty of Law in 2022. Before attending law school, she earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree (Honours) in Criminal Justice.

In law school, Julie’s academic and extracurricular focus was on criminal law, constitutional law, and advocacy. She completed courses in Advanced Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, Advanced Evidence, and Advanced Trial Advocacy. She received several merit-based scholarships, including the Gary J. Bigg Memorial Award in Law and Advocacy.

In her final year of law school, Julie participated in the Western Canada Criminal Trial Advocacy Moot. After placing among the top three teams, she and her partner advanced to the National Criminal Trial Advocacy Moot in Ottawa, the Sopinka Cup. Julie was awarded the Oralist Prize for Best Closing Jury Address in a mock first-degree murder trial.

Throughout law school, Julie was an avid volunteer with Student Legal Services’ Criminal Law Project. In her second year, she gained valuable experience as a Day Leader, defending individuals charged with a variety of criminal offences. Julie also worked as a summer student with the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service, where she gained valuable insight into how prosecutors assess and advance criminal cases. This experience has provided Julie with a well-rounded understanding of the criminal justice system and informs her approach to criminal defence.

Julie is an experienced trial lawyer who has defended against various charges under the Criminal Code, the Youth Criminal Justice Act, and the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

In addition to her trial practice, Julie has developed an appellate practice and has argued several matters before the Alberta Court of Appeal. She also represents individuals before the Alberta Criminal Code Review Board who have been found not criminally responsible or unfit to stand trial.

Julie is committed to defending the rights of her clients and advocating for their best interests at every stage of the criminal process. She can be reached by contacting our Edmonton office or by email at [email protected].
